Your Guide to Local Events

Updated: Jan 10

In a world where connection is more important than ever, finding ways to engage with others who share similar experiences can be incredibly rewarding. For those navigating the unique challenges of auDHD (Autism and ADHD), local events offer a fantastic opportunity to meet like-minded individuals, share stories, and build a supportive community.

Preparing for Events

Once you’ve found an event that interests you, preparation can help ensure a positive experience. Here are some tips:

1. Understand the Environment

Before attending, try to gather information about the venue. Consider:

  • Noise Levels: Is it a quiet space or likely to be loud?

  • Crowd Size: Smaller gatherings may feel less overwhelming.

  • Accessibility: Ensure the venue is accessible and comfortable for your needs.

2. Bring Comfort Items

Having familiar items can help ease anxiety. Consider bringing:

  • Noise-Canceling Headphones: These can help manage sensory overload.

  • Fidget Tools: Items like stress balls or fidget spinners can provide comfort during social interactions.

  • Snacks and Water: Keeping hydrated and having snacks on hand can help maintain energy levels.

3. Set Personal Goals

Before attending, think about what you hope to achieve. This could be as simple as:

  • Meeting One New Person: Setting small, achievable goals can make socializing feel less daunting.

  • Learning Something New: Focus on gaining knowledge or skills from the event.

Making Connections

Once you’re at the event, focus on building connections. Here are some strategies:

1. Start Small

Begin with brief interactions. A simple “hello” or compliment can open the door to more extended conversations.

2. Use Open-Ended Questions

Encourage dialogue by asking questions that require more than a yes or no answer. For example:

  • “What brought you to this event?”

  • “What hobbies do you enjoy?”

3. Share Your Experiences

Don’t hesitate to share your own stories. Personal anecdotes can foster deeper connections and help others relate to your experiences.

Following Up

After the event, consider following up with new acquaintances. This could be as simple as:

  • Sending a Message: A quick note thanking them for the conversation can leave a positive impression.

  • Connecting on Social Media: If comfortable, connecting online can help maintain the relationship.

Engaging with local events tailored for individuals with auDHD can significantly enhance your social life and provide valuable support. By understanding your needs, preparing adequately, and actively seeking connections, you can create meaningful relationships and foster a sense of community. Remember, every small step counts, and each event is an opportunity to learn, grow, and connect. So, take the plunge and explore what your local area has to offer. You never know who you might meet or what you might discover!

Local Events for auDHD

I will add to this more later. As of now, I believe the only set auDHD events are from this group, but I'm hoping to connect with other groups and businesses. Or, maybe someone who is auDHD who also owns a crafting business (cough cough, Lauren), has a book club, etc.

I do plan on adding another night at Consignment Lounge and a weekly coffee hang. I also hope to add local, weekend events for anyone who wants to attend, a game night somewhere, and so on. I'll also look into educational events.

So many options!
